Current game & updates
What is live now, what changed most recently, and what is actually dated next.
What is Rust today?
Rust is a released multiplayer survival game that remains in active development. It left Early Access on 8 February 2018, but Facepunch has continued shipping major updates rather than treating 2018 as the end of development. This page is PC-first unless an answer explicitly says Console Edition, Mobile or Rust+. [1] [2]
Keep in mind: The commercial-release date and the beginning of Rust’s public history are different dates.
What is the latest named Rust PC update?
Livestock Update, released 1 October 2026. The current Facepunch news index still lists it as the newest named update. It adds cows and sheep, Biofuel, power-grid loot rooms, the Air Wolf helipad repair mechanic and the Rust Render Pipeline transition among other changes. [2] [3]
Keep in mind: A named update is not necessarily the same thing as the newest client/server build or every small hotfix.
When is the next Rust update?
The next specifically announced gate is the Halloween client/server update on 22 October 2026 at 18:00 BST. Facepunch’s normal first-Thursday cadence points to 5 November as the next monthly slot, but that calculation does not announce a title, contents or exact November deployment time. [3] [16]
Keep in mind: The Halloween announcement dates the mandatory event update; it does not automatically date every Halloween DLC/store item seen in development.
What did the Livestock Update add?
The headline additions are breedable cows and sheep, a Biofuel Generator, expanded power-grid loot rooms and a repairable Air Wolf helipad. Livestock have needs and genetics; cows produce milk, sheep produce wool, and both produce dung. Rust also moved onto its custom Rust Render Pipeline with a transition-time fallback option. [3]
Keep in mind: Server convars can change some mechanics, including the Air Wolf pad requirement. The RRP fallback remains a transition feature, not proof that every renderer path has already been removed.
Wipes & progression
The questions most likely to cause confusion between map resets, Blueprint resets and progression changes.
When do Rust PC servers wipe?
For servers using Facepunch’s documented wipe-timer defaults, monthly wipes are the first Thursday at 19:00 London time, weekly wipes every Thursday at 19:00, and biweekly wipes the first and third Thursdays. Five-Thursday months use a documented two-plus-one-week adjustment, and server owners can override the schedule. [4]
Keep in mind: These are configurable timer defaults. They do not prove the actual wipe time of every server.
Do PC and Console Edition use the same wipe schedule?
No. Facepunch’s documented PC monthly timer defaults to the first Thursday at 19:00 London time, while the current Rust Console Edition FAQ says its monthly servers wipe on the last Thursday at 18:00 UTC. Use each product’s own server announcement rather than transferring one schedule to the other. [4] [18]
Keep in mind: PC timer defaults are configurable and community/custom servers can differ. Console Edition is a separately maintained product.
Does every monthly wipe reset Blueprints?
No universal every-month Blueprint-reset rule is established. A map/save wipe, a Blueprint wipe and an individual server’s progression policy are separate things. Facepunch has issued dated full Blueprint wipes—for example with Pivot Or Die—but that does not make every monthly map reset a Blueprint reset. [4] [5]
Keep in mind: For a specific server, use that server’s wipe announcement or rules.
How does Rust progression work now?
Workbenches and Tech Trees remain part of progression, alongside researching found items. Higher-tier progression was reworked in October 2025 to use Basic and Advanced Blueprint Fragments, and those fragment gates survived the November rebalance. In May 2026, lootable Workbench upgrades added configurable bonuses on top rather than replacing Tech Trees. [7] [23] [5] [6]
Keep in mind: Exact live item paths, Scrap prices and server-specific settings are more volatile than the high-level progression structure.
What changed with Blueprint Fragments in 2025?
October 2025 introduced a new fragment layer for higher-tier Workbench progression. Basic and Advanced Blueprint Fragments were used for Tier 2 and Tier 3 progression. This is a different system from the old 2015 Blueprint Fragment era. [23]
Keep in mind: Historical names can repeat in Rust without meaning the old implementation has simply returned unchanged.
Did Pivot Or Die remove Scrap from progression?
No. The November 2025 update reduced research and Tech Tree Scrap prices and removed the Scrap cost from crafting Workbenches, while retaining the new fragment requirements. It also performed a full Blueprint wipe for that change. [5]
Keep in mind: Those are dated release changes; do not assume every exact November cost remains unchanged without a current mechanics check.
Major systems & world
A compact answer to what Rust actually offers now without duplicating the full Features catalogue.
What major systems does PC Rust currently have?
Rust now spans survival, base building and upkeep, progression, farming, power, automation, transport, trading and large world systems. Current product/release evidence covers base building, Workbenches and Tech Trees, electricity and Industrial automation, player vending, horses, cars, aircraft, surface and underground rail, underwater exploration, submarines and modular boats, plus monument and social systems. September 2026 also reworked upkeep scaling for larger privilege groups. [7] [8] [9] [24] [13]
Keep in mind: This is a high-level system map, not a recipe list or guarantee that every community server enables identical settings.
Does Rust have electricity and industrial automation?
Yes. Electricity is a long-standing live system, while the 2023 Industrial Update added pipes, industrial conveyors, automated crafting and electric furnaces. Current product copy still describes electrical, farming and automation systems. [8] [7]
Keep in mind: Historical launch behaviour does not guarantee every original power cost, recipe or throughput value is still unchanged.
What are the Deep Sea and Naval systems?
Naval is live PC content, not a future roadmap concept. The February 2026 Naval Update added player-built modular boats, the Deep Sea, Floating Cities, tropical islands, Ghost Ships, patrol/scientist boats and missions. Shipshape then expanded Deep Sea access and supported electrical/industrial/water systems on boats. [9] [17]
Keep in mind: Deep Sea is not the same thing as the separately planned Nexus / Server Transfer system.
Is the Jungle biome live?
Yes. Jungle shipped on 1 May 2025 with a new biome, climbable trees and vines, ruins/ziggurat spaces, wildlife including tigers and crocodiles, and deeper rivers; the current Steam product page still lists the Jungle biome among Rust’s present systems. [10] [7]
Keep in mind: This answer establishes the released biome, not every current spawn rate or loot table.
What are Apartments, Clans and player-maintained monuments?
They are live 2026 systems. Common Ground added the Apartment Complex, rentable player shops and a Clan system that is separate from ordinary teams, with Clan Tables, roles/permissions, clan chat and nearby clan-member map visibility. Power Trip then added player-maintained monument infrastructure centred on restarting the Power Plant and affecting map services. Breach and Clear extended those dependencies with monument blockers, HQM geography and marketplace-power changes. [11] [12] [13]
Keep in mind: Clans are not the same thing as ordinary temporary teams, and the July release specification excludes Clans from Hardcore.
Modes & technical rules
Mode-specific and optional systems that should not be mistaken for universal vanilla rules.
What are the current Softcore raid-protection rules?
The July 2026 Softcore specification uses a default 18:00–21:00 server-local raid window. Outside that window, qualifying Tool Cupboards protect building blocks and doors; deployables are not covered. A Tool Cupboard must be at least one hour old, and Softcore also specifies 2× resource gathering. [11]
Keep in mind: These are Softcore rules and server settings can differ; they are not universal vanilla Rust rules.
Were Hardcore or Primitive removed?
No. September 2026 release evidence still refers to Hardcore servers and says selected Primitive servers were closed while others continued. That is consolidation, not removal of either mode. [13]
Keep in mind: A complete October server-browser census was not performed, so this establishes continuing mode/server evidence rather than an exhaustive current server roster.
Are the new navmesh, Rust Render Pipeline and Animation Jobs 4 universal defaults?
No. They are different transitions with different scopes. The new NPC navmesh remains conditional on server enablement; the Rust Render Pipeline is the new client renderer but still has a temporary fallback switch during the transition; and Jobs 4 remains experimental rather than the universal animation default. [3] [11]
Keep in mind: Optional, transition fallback and experimental are different states. Jobs 3 is the last explicitly confirmed animation default in the release history.
Do all Rust servers require TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot?
No. Those additional hardware/security requirements belong to the Secure Servers rollout, not every Rust server. Facepunch expanded the rollout in October 2026, while broader adoption remained a direction rather than a universal requirement. Secure Servers should also stay separate from Easy Anti-Cheat and the still-unidentified additional third-party anticheat layer. [17] [3] [16]
Keep in mind: Server-wide Secure requirements and per-player checks are not the same thing, and individual server eligibility/configuration can change.
Does a Facepunch commit or Staging test mean a feature is live?
No. A commit proves scoped development activity; Staging proves opt-in test availability. Main delivery needs release evidence, and some released mechanics can still be optional or server-configured. [14] [2]
Keep in mind: This is why Sourceborne treats branches, Staging, Main release and enabled-by-default as separate states.
Roadmap & unreleased features
What Facepunch has actually planned, versus what implementation traces merely suggest.
What is officially planned for Q4 2026?
The current roadmap lists Rust Premium, Animals, Dogs, Biofuel Generator, Player Customisation and Bug Reward System. Livestock/animal breeding and Biofuel have already partly or wholly delivered, so the list is cumulative rather than six untouched future promises. [14] [3]
Keep in mind: The roadmap says it is a direction of travel, not a guaranteed delivery contract.
What is planned for Rust in 2027?
The current 2027 list includes Nexus System with Server Transfer and Deep Sea Nexus, Improved Animal AI, Procedural Caves, Nomadic Dweller, Improve Underground Trains, Terrain Deformation, Grappling Hook and New Weapons. The roadmap does not give exact dates or ordering within 2027. [14]
Keep in mind: A year bucket is not an exact release schedule.
What is Rust Premium?
It is a planned monthly opt-in product for additional skins/perks. Facepunch explicitly says it is not a battle pass or VIP system. It is separate from the existing Premium Access Pass, which is the renamed server-access eligibility system and retained a stated $15-or-more Steam inventory-value threshold in June. That $15 threshold is not a Rust Premium subscription price. Final Rust Premium price, complete benefits and launch date remain unconfirmed. [15] [14]
Keep in mind: The earlier battlepass-style exploration and Rust Premium should not be described as a simple rename without evidence.
What is the planned Bug Reward System?
It is an official Q4 2026 roadmap item, but its final rules are not yet defined by the evidence here. In January, Facepunch separately said it wanted to reward good and accurate bug reports, partly to encourage Staging use. That makes a connection plausible, but Facepunch has not explicitly said the roadmap label is exactly that same programme. It should also stay separate from the existing HackerOne security-vulnerability bounty. [14] [16]
Keep in mind: Do not merge Bug Reward System, HackerOne and the separate roadmap Stretch Goal called Bounty System without an explicit first-party link.
Are Dogs live yet?
Dogs are planned for Q4 2026, but Main delivery is not established. The current development branch reuses dog models, materials, animations, harnesses and prefabs extracted from the old Pets2 branch. That proves asset lineage, not that old taming, ownership or AI mechanics will return unchanged. [14] [26]
Keep in mind: Implementation lineage is not the same as final feature design.
How will Player Customisation work?
The final player-facing rules are not confirmed. Player Customisation is an official Q4 plan. In the current development branch, #163815 adds pre-join character selection, #163832 describes binding the chosen character to a server until its next wipe, and #165177 adds a capability to limit race/gender changes relative to the Steam-ID-derived original. None of those branch rules is a shipped universal policy yet. [14] [25]
Keep in mind: A release/devblog must define the final choices, restrictions and wipe behaviour.
Is Nexus / Server Transfer live?
No Main delivery is established. Nexus System, Server Transfer and Deep Sea Nexus sit in the 2027 roadmap. The already-released Deep Sea area from Naval is a different thing and does not itself provide cross-server transfer. [14] [9]
Keep in mind: Do not use the word “Nexus” as a synonym for Deep Sea.
Are Procedural Caves or the underground-train overhaul live?
No Main release is established for either. Both are official 2027 plans. The underground-train branch contains substantial station, random-room, tunnel and related implementation work, but shows no release to Main; Procedural Caves remains still only a roadmap plan. [14] [27]
Keep in mind: A large feature branch can exist for months before shipment.
How reliable is the Rust roadmap?
Use it as published intent, not a promise or a live-state checklist. The live roadmap still shows a 27 August 2026 update label and mixes already-delivered, partly delivered and future items. Quarter/year placement does not supply an exact release date, and a development branch does not silently move a roadmap item forward. Confirm actual delivery against release notes. [14]
Keep in mind: Roadmap history also needs dated captures; the current page cannot by itself prove what an older version showed.
Platforms & companion apps
Keep PC, Console Edition, Mobile and Rust+ as separate products/capabilities.
Is Rust Console Edition the same version as PC Rust?
No. Console Edition is separately maintained and has its own supported platforms, patches and wipe calendar. PC update dates and feature delivery should not be imported into Console Edition. [18]
Keep in mind: Shared branding does not establish feature parity.
Can PC players crossplay with Rust Console Edition?
The retained developer answer is no. In a June 2021 interview, Double Eleven lead programmer Matt Philipps said Console Edition had console-to-console crossplay but not PC crossplay because it is a separate game and experience. The current Console FAQ was also checked and no later affirmative PC-crossplay reversal was located. [28] [18]
Keep in mind: The direct no-PC-crossplay statement is historical developer testimony, not a newly issued 2026 interoperability policy.
What is the current status of Rust Mobile?
Preregistration remains open, but the latest located beta has ended and global commercial release is not established. The official Mobile news surface lists the second beta as running from 23 August to 30 September 2026. As of 7 October 2026, the site still offers preregistration/launch updates but does not state that a new beta is currently active or that the game has globally launched. Rust Mobile remains a separate product from PC Rust. [19]
Keep in mind: Do not import PC roadmap items or release dates into Mobile unless its own sources confirm them.
Is Rust+ the same thing as Rust Mobile?
Is Rust supported on Steam Deck, Linux or macOS?
The current Steam listing provides Windows and macOS client requirements and marks Steam Deck as Unsupported. Current official sources do not establish a current native Linux client-support promise; Linux dedicated-server support is a separate question from Linux client support. [7]
Keep in mind: Storefront support labels can change; dedicated-server operating systems are a separate question from client support.
Lore & common misconceptions
Only the lore questions that repeatedly distort factual discussion elsewhere.
Does R.U.S.T officially stand for “Repopulation Unit Survival Test”?
Yes, in the May 2023 Nuclear Missile Silo worldbuilding. Facepunch explicitly expands R.U.S.T as Repopulation Unit Survival Test and frames a recurring survival test. That does not prove every earlier use of the game title carried the same in-world expansion. [21]
Keep in mind: A recurring-test frame is not automatically proof of a literal simulation, cloning or a complete respawn mechanism.
What is Project Nova, and does it explain respawning or Mars?
Project Nova is a real Cobalt-labelled project, but the first-party material does not establish its destination, full purpose or any link to player respawning. The official space-suit vignette only ties Nova to urgent EVA-equipment procurement. Claims that it explains respawning or a Cobalt Mars expedition remain unconfirmed theory, not FAQ fact. [22]
Keep in mind: Broader Project Nova theories belong on the dedicated Rust Lore and Rumours pages, where their community origin and counter-evidence can be shown properly.

Sources & notes
This public FAQ is a selective projection of Sourceborne’s Rust question bank. It prefers current first-party product/release text for “now” answers and uses historical release or direct-developer testimony only with explicit date boundaries. Development branches support development clues only; they do not establish Main delivery. Server configuration can differ, roadmap placement does not establish release, and Console Edition/Mobile remain separate product histories.
