ARDEM gameplay: what the developer says is working, what is still being built, and what remains unproven

ARDEM's current design combines familiar survival pressures with systems Techtive wants to make unusually interactive: bases can be electrified, vehicles repaired and modified, and parts of the world restored or changed. Steam says several of those systems are already working together. The important limitation is that players do not yet have a representative public build against which to test that claim. A01 A02 A05

The intended survival loop

The broad loop Techtive describes begins with exploration and survival. Players move through Minnowa for food, water, tools, weapons and construction material while dealing with weather, infected and — on applicable servers — other players. What they recover is meant to feed longer-term projects rather than only the next crafting recipe. A01 A02

Those supplies can turn a shelter into a base, and power can turn the base into something more useful: lights, garage doors, outlets, floodlights and security equipment are all current examples. Vehicles extend the range of future trips and allow heavier material to be moved, but are themselves meant to require fuel, repair and maintenance. Farming, hunting, fishing and crafting can then reduce dependence on scavenging without removing the need to engage with the world. A01 A02

Online, Techtive says that loop sits inside a 24/7 persistent world. Territory claims and a lasting reputation are supposed to give construction, cooperation and conflict consequences beyond a single session. The direction is clear; the rules for ownership, raiding, offline protection, wipes and reputation are not. A01

That is the design claim. The October public test is where the quality of those interactions becomes observable.

Base building

Steam describes a deep base-building system and says the Early Access core includes base building. The official site presents bases as defensible homes that can be expanded, furnished and connected to electricity. A01 A02

Current evidence supports the system's place in the design, but several practical questions remain open:

  • Can existing houses/buildings be claimed or fortified?
  • How free is object placement?
  • Are there designated build zones?
  • How do raiding and damage work?
  • What happens to a base while the owner is offline?
  • Are there wipes?
  • How persistent are placed objects through server updates?

Those details will materially affect whether ARDEM's base system feels like a sandbox or a conventional survival-game construction layer.

Electricity

Electricity is one of ARDEM's clearest design pillars. Current material describes gasoline generators, wind turbines and solar panels, with power used for lighting and other equipment. The website also describes security/floodlight-style applications. A01 A02

Historical playtests included electricity work, which gives this system a longer implementation history than some of ARDEM's newer features. That still does not establish the depth of the current implementation. The public test needs to show whether power is a meaningful logistics and defence layer or mainly a set of isolated devices. A14 A15

Vehicles

Current product material says players can scavenge, repair, maintain and customise vehicles, while managing fuel, terrain and mechanical problems. Vehicles are also meant to help carry heavy materials and people across Minnowa. A01 A02

The current sources do not yet establish final physics, damage modelling, vehicle persistence, theft/security rules or the exact vehicle roster.

For the wider loop, the consequential question is whether recovering a vehicle changes what a player or group can do: reach distant locations, move building materials, evacuate with loot or support a base. A drivable vehicle alone would not establish that depth.

Crafting and farming

Techtive called crafting a core system in June and said it was continuing to expand the available item set with community feedback. A11

Farming is listed by Steam as part of the core Early Access system set, while September development material shows work on crop growth stages. That means farming exists in the developer's claimed core but is still being refined, rather than being a finished feature. A02 A06

Infected, weapons and combat

September material shows active work on weapons and attachments, with Techtive emphasising realism, functionality and compatibility between parts. A July development roundup also showed work on infected facial and animation reactions for wandering, spotting, chasing and attacking. These are work-in-progress demonstrations, not proof of the final combat encounter. A06 A09 A22

What the current material does not establish is how gunplay feels, how recoil and ballistics work, how damage is modelled, or whether the infected are convincing combat opponents. Those are among the most important public-test questions because they cannot be judged well from static feature descriptions.

Character and clothing systems

The July character-editor post describes a work-in-progress editor with male/female options, multiple body shapes, ethnicity choices, presets and extensive facial controls. A10

September material shows clothing designed to react to damage, water, blood and dirt and to fit across multiple body morphs. Techtive explicitly says that work can still change before players receive it. A06

Exploration and environmental interaction

Minnowa is presented as fully handcrafted, with hundreds of locations and no procedural generation. Techtive describes environmental storytelling through abandoned settlements, industrial sites, military areas and other remnants of civilisation. A01 A07

Steam also gives examples of player actions changing the world, including repairing bridges, restoring power grids and securing areas. These are current product claims; the scale and permanence of those changes still need public verification. A02

Multiplayer

Steam lists single-player, online co-op and online PvP and says up to 64 players can share a server. Current ARDEM product pages also advertise PvE, PvP and RP choices. The homepage hero separately says “64+ Player Servers”; Sourceborne uses “up to 64” as the more precise current baseline. A01 A02

The developer's language suggests player relationships are intended to matter, but the concrete social systems are not yet clear. In particular, Sourceborne has not found a current detailed explanation of:

  • reputation mechanics;
  • anti-kill-on-sight incentives;
  • faction/clan systems in the present build;
  • PvE/PvP server-rule differences;
  • base protection while offline;
  • wipe cadence;
  • cross-server character persistence.

Older plans that should not be promoted as current features

The pinned Steam FAQ lists longer-term ideas including boats, aircraft, seasons and a skill system, and says the team wants broader modding/private-server support. That FAQ is partially stale, so those items belong in a future-plan bucket unless newer material reconfirms them. A13

The closed test is not a gameplay review build

The present closed playtest is under NDA and intentionally contains very little of the content planned for October. Techtive says it exists to stress servers, generate crashes and collect technical data. A05

That makes it a poor basis for evaluating the full gameplay loop. The narrow closed build cannot prove that advertised features do not exist, just as marketing copy cannot prove that they work well.

Confirmed information

The strongest direct evidence is that Techtive is actively developing these systems and has published current implementation/design statements. Steam's Early Access disclosure specifically names base building, farming, hunger/thirst, weather, electricity, vehicles and crafting as core systems. A02

Reported information

No independent hands-on reporting is used here. Until the public test, the current-gameplay picture is dominated by developer/product evidence and historical test records.

Analysis

ARDEM's risk is not that its feature list is empty; it is that the feature list is unusually broad. The October public test should be treated as a systems-integration test from an editorial perspective: the question is whether electricity, vehicles, base building, survival pressure, infected and multiplayer form a coherent loop rather than merely existing as separate mechanics.

Hypotheses

H1 — System interaction will matter more than raw feature count. If ARDEM succeeds, it is likely to be because its electricity, vehicles, bases and persistent world reinforce one another. If those systems feel isolated, the feature breadth becomes less meaningful.

H2 — PvE/PvP separation will materially affect audience fit. Current product pages advertise both. Clear server-rule separation could broaden the audience beyond players comfortable with high-conflict survival servers.

FAQ entries

Is ARDEM first-person or third-person?

The pinned Steam FAQ says players are intended to switch between first- and third-person views, while Steam currently shows both as user-defined tags. The final implementation and server-level restrictions are not yet publicly verified. A13 A02

Can ARDEM be played solo?

Yes according to the current Steam feature listing/product description. A02

Is PvP forced?

Current product material advertises PvE, PvP and RP server choices, which points away from forced universal PvP. Detailed server rules still need confirmation. A01 A02

Does ARDEM have base building?

Yes as a developer-described core system. The flexibility and persistence rules still need public-build verification. A02

Are vehicles drivable?

Vehicles are a core advertised system with repair, maintenance and modification. The final handling/physics model is not established publicly. A01 A02
