StarCraft FAQ: release date, gameplay, multiplayer, platforms and Dominion

Blizzard has announced a new open-world StarCraft shooter targeting Spring 2030. This FAQ gives direct answers on the release date, third-person gameplay, single-player focus, multiplayer and co-op, PS5/Xbox/PC platform questions, StarCraft 3 and what Dominion actually means.

Current boundary: announced / pre-release / active development. No public gameplay demo, complete platform list or confirmed multiplayer mode is established in the reviewed evidence.

02 / Identity

What is the new StarCraft game?

The basic identity questions are now much clearer after BlizzCon, but naming and historical-project comparisons still create avoidable confusion.

What is the new StarCraft game?

Blizzard has officially announced STARCRAFT, an original open-world shooter set in the Koprulu Sector and targeting Spring 2030. It is a new StarCraft action game, not an announced real-time-strategy sequel.

Is this StarCraft 3?

No. Blizzard has not announced a game called StarCraft III. The official public name of this project is currently STARCRAFT; “StarCraft 3” is search shorthand, not the title Blizzard has announced.

Is the game called StarCraft: Dominion?

No. Blizzard’s reveal video is titled STARCRAFT | Announce Cinematic | Dominion, but Dominion has not been announced as the game’s subtitle. It is part of the reveal cinematic and campaign language.

What kind of game is it?

It is an open-world StarCraft shooter. Blizzard has officially confirmed the format; developers currently describe a third-person, single-player-focused, narrative-led Marine experience, although those details can still change before release.

Where is the game set?

The game returns to the Koprulu Sector. Developers say the new story is set roughly 70 years after the previous StarCraft story, giving Blizzard room for changed factions, new characters and a different political landscape.

How far along is development?

It is in active development, but Blizzard described it as early in development when it was announced. The team is already discussing missions, combat, armour, factions and the open world in detail, but no alpha, beta, feature-complete state or other formal production milestone has been announced.

Has Blizzard shown gameplay yet?

No. Blizzard has shown an announcement cinematic, not public gameplay. A reporter said he had seen early internal test footage before the reveal, but that footage was never released publicly and should not be treated as proof of the final controls, HUD or mechanics.

Is this connected to StarCraft: Ghost or Project Ares?

No direct project-continuity evidence has been established. They are relevant history for Blizzard’s attempts at StarCraft action games, but shared franchise, genre or staff does not prove that this project inherits their code, systems, story or design.

03 / Release & development

When is the new StarCraft game coming out?

Spring 2030 is real, but it is still a future target rather than a finished-date guarantee.

When is the new StarCraft game coming out?

Blizzard is targeting Spring 2030. That is the current official release window, but there is no exact date yet and the target can still move while the game is in development.

Is Spring 2030 confirmed?

Yes—as Blizzard’s current public target window. Developers have also spoken confidently about 2030, but the game remains years from release and the window can still change.

Is the 2030 release guaranteed?

No. Public confidence and schedule discipline make the target meaningful, but they do not make future delivery inevitable.

Is there an exact release date?

No. Spring 2030 is the most precise public release timing currently established.

Has a beta, demo or public test been announced?

No. Blizzard has not announced a public alpha, beta, demo or playable test, and there is no public client available in the reviewed evidence.

Has Blizzard published a formal roadmap?

No. Blizzard has not published a feature-by-feature roadmap or dated development schedule. It has said that gameplay reveals and world deep-dives will come over the years ahead, but it has not given those disclosures a timetable.

Will Blizzard show gameplay before release?

Yes, Blizzard says gameplay reveals will come over the years ahead. It has not announced when the first reveal will happen or which event will host it.

04 / Gameplay & modes

How is STARCRAFT currently intended to play?

This is where the evidence is strongest beyond the announcement itself: camera, campaign focus, open-world structure, weapons, ammunition and armour all have direct developer detail.

Is the new StarCraft game third-person?

Yes—the current principal camera is third-person. Dan Hay says the team wants players to see the scale and physical weight of their armour, although he has left room for isolated sequences or spaces to use another perspective.

Is the game single-player?

Yes. Single-player is the current development focus, centred on the Marine fantasy and a narrative-led campaign with a defined ending.

Is it single-player only?

That is not established. Blizzard has described the current focus as single-player, but it has not published a complete mode list or ruled out co-op, PvP or another multiplayer mode.

Is multiplayer confirmed?

No. Blizzard’s current public focus is single-player, and it has not confirmed co-op, PvP or any other multiplayer mode for release.

Is co-op confirmed?

No. Blizzard has not announced campaign co-op or another co-op mode. The current post-reveal development focus is single-player, so co-op should remain an open question rather than an expected feature.

Is PvP confirmed?

No. Blizzard has not announced a PvP or competitive multiplayer mode.

What do we know about the campaign?

The current design combines authored story missions with open-world exploration, side quests and character progression. Developers describe a complete narrative with a beginning, middle and definitive ending rather than an endless seasonal story loop.

Are there side quests?

Yes, as current developer-described direction. Side quests sit alongside authored story missions and broader exploration.

What is the open world supposed to be for?

The open world is meant to do more than connect story missions. Developers describe exploring for useful finds, tackling side content, improving your preparation before harder missions and disrupting relationships between hostile groups—including using their conflicts to your advantage. The exact systems have not been shown publicly.

What do we know about weapons and ammunition?

Developers are planning multiple weapon types, and Dan Hay says the player should solve ammunition problems. A Gauss rifle is one current Marine-combat example, but the final arsenal, loadout rules, pickups and ammo economy are still unknown.

How will ammunition work?

Hay says current design thinking expects the player to solve ammunition problems. The exact scarcity, pickup, reserve, reload, crafting or wider economy model is not established.

Will there be multiple weapon types?

Current design discussion includes more than one weapon type, but Blizzard has not disclosed the finished roster, carry limits, inventory/loadout rules, attachments or upgrades.

Is a Gauss rifle confirmed?

A Gauss rifle is a developer-described weapon example for the current Marine combat fantasy. That does not establish the final weapon roster, exact model or implementation.

Can exploration improve the player's armour or preparation?

Yes, at the level of current design direction. Developers describe finding useful material or gear in the world and using it to strengthen armour or improve preparation. That does not establish a formal crafting/salvage system or rarity economy.

How does armour work?

Armour is one of the clearest current gameplay pillars. Developers describe one suit that the player should care for, repair and build up over time; exploration can uncover useful finds that strengthen it, and people in the world are intended to notice what the player has done with the suit. The exact repair, upgrade and durability systems are still undisclosed.

Is there crafting or a loot-shooter system?

Neither is confirmed. Finding and repurposing useful objects to strengthen armour does not by itself establish crafting recipes, loot rarity, colour tiers or a looter-shooter structure.

Are classes or skill trees confirmed?

No formal class system or skill tree has been announced. Recruitment and exploratory role examples are not enough to turn those systems into confirmed features.

Are vehicles confirmed?

No. Blizzard has not publicly established vehicles or a specific special-traversal system for this game.

Can players use enemy factions against each other?

That is part of the current high-level design direction. The team has talked about disrupting hostile relationships and using conflicts between groups to the player’s advantage, but the exact mechanic has not been shown.

How difficult is the game intended to be?

Developers describe a gritty and challenging experience, but not one meant to require elite reaction speed or become relentlessly punishing. The exact difficulty modes and accessibility settings are still unannounced.

05 / Story, setting & factions

What do we know about the story and factions?

The broad era and faction presence are becoming clear, but character identity and playability remain much less settled.

When is the story set?

Developers describe STARCRAFT as taking place roughly 70 years after the previous StarCraft story. Sourceborne does not infer a more precise in-universe year from older franchise chronology.

Is the protagonist a Marine?

Yes, the current design is built around a persistent Marine-focused protagonist. What remains unclear is how much of that character is predetermined versus created or named by the player.

Can players create and name the protagonist?

That remains unresolved. One direct developer interview describes the protagonist as player-created and named by the player, while other direct-source framing describes the character differently.

Are Zerg and Protoss in the game?

Yes. Zerg are established in the announcement material, and developers have directly discussed Protoss encounters as part of the current direction. That confirms their presence, not that either faction will be playable.

Can you play as Zerg or Protoss?

That is not established. A faction appearing in the game or as an enemy does not mean it is playable.

Are old StarCraft characters returning?

No returning legacy character is currently confirmed in the reviewed project evidence. The 70-year time jump gives Blizzard room to change the cast and political landscape.

What was the Conflicting Records / Roxara campaign?

It was an official Blizzard pre-reveal StarCraft campaign built around conflicting Dominion records, Roxara and related fiction. Developers later connected the campaign to teasing this project, but that does not make every campaign detail final-game canon.

What is Project Spellbind?

Project Spellbind is an operation named inside the Conflicting Records fiction. It is not the game title, and Blizzard has not confirmed that it will appear as a mission or story element in the finished game.

06 / Platforms & product model

Where will STARCRAFT be available—and what kind of product is it?

Platform messaging is incomplete, while the product-structure direction is clearer: self-contained story, boxed/package structure and no current seasonal model.

What platforms is STARCRAFT coming to?

Blizzard has not published the full launch-platform list. Xbox UK publicly said the game is coming to Xbox console; Blizzard later said platform details were not yet being announced and then clarified that STARCRAFT will not be exclusive.

Is STARCRAFT an Xbox exclusive?

No. Blizzard says STARCRAFT will not be exclusive, although the complete platform set remains undisclosed. Xbox UK’s Xbox-console statement remains a genuine first-party signal; the clarification does not by itself confirm PC, PlayStation, Nintendo, a particular Xbox generation or Game Pass.

Is the new StarCraft game coming to Xbox?

Xbox UK publicly said the game is coming to Xbox console. Blizzard later said it was not yet announcing platforms, so Xbox has a meaningful official platform signal but the exact Xbox hardware and full launch lineup are still unsettled.

Is the new StarCraft game coming to PC?

Not yet. Blizzard has not formally announced PC as a launch platform for this project, despite StarCraft’s long history on PC.

Is the new StarCraft game coming to PS5 or PlayStation?

Not yet. Blizzard has not announced a PlayStation or PS5 version. Its statement that STARCRAFT will not be exclusive leaves more platforms possible, but it does not confirm PlayStation.

Is the new StarCraft game coming to Game Pass?

No Game Pass or other subscription inclusion is currently established.

Will the new StarCraft game have crossplay?

Crossplay has not been announced. Blizzard has not yet confirmed the complete platform set or any multiplayer mode, so cross-platform multiplayer remains unknown.

Is STARCRAFT a live-service game?

Not in the seasonal sense developers have described. Dan Hay says the current plan is a self-contained box/package game with a definitive ending and no seasonal structure; Blizzard has not yet explained every online feature, multiplayer possibility, DLC plan or post-launch update model.

What does Blizzard mean by a “box product”?

It means the team is currently building a self-contained game with a finite story rather than a seasonal content loop. It does not mean Blizzard has confirmed a physical box or disc, offline play, a price or a specific edition structure.

Will there be seasons, DLC or expansions?

Seasons are not the current design direction, but Blizzard has not announced whether the finished game will receive DLC, expansions or another form of post-launch support.

Will the game require an internet connection?

Unknown. Blizzard has not said whether the game will require a constant internet connection, nor has it confirmed full offline play.

07 / Common confusion

What should readers be careful not to assume?

These questions are common because search results, trailers and job listings can make an uncertain idea look more settled than it is.

Is Nexon co-developing the announced shooter?

Not at the 13 September 2026 interview cut. Blizzard CMO Monica Austin said Blizzard was the sole developer. Broader partnership discussions do not establish Nexon as a co-developer of this project, and the statement is not a permanent no-partners promise.

Does the Dominion cinematic prove gameplay mechanics?

No. The Dominion cinematic is announcement media, not gameplay footage. It can show characters, factions and visual ideas used in the reveal, but it does not confirm the HUD, controls, combat rules, traversal or final camera implementation.

Do job listings prove multiplayer or live-service features?

No. Job listings tell us what skills Blizzard is hiring for and which development areas exist; they do not turn every requirement into a promised feature. Networking or live-game experience, for example, does not confirm multiplayer or a live-service model.

Does armour improvement make this a looter-shooter?

No. The evidence supports armour ownership, improvement and useful world finds, but Blizzard has not announced colour-coded rarity, endless gear drops or another system that would justify calling it a looter-shooter.

Is Unreal Engine 5 confirmed for STARCRAFT?

No. A Blizzard job listing references Unreal Engine 5 pipeline experience, which is a useful production signal, but Blizzard has not announced the final shipping engine for the game.

What are the biggest things we still do not know?

The biggest open questions are the complete platform list, exact release date, multiplayer/co-op/PvP, protagonist creation and naming, detailed weapon and ammo systems, world size and traversal, the exact armour upgrade/repair model, online requirements, pricing/editions and the wider post-launch plan.

08 / Still unknown

The biggest unanswered questions are still genuinely open

These are not research gaps that should be filled with genre assumptions. Blizzard simply has not disclosed them yet.

Complete platformsNon-exclusivity is established; the final Xbox / PC / PlayStation / other launch set is not.
Multiplayer modesSingle-player is the focus, but co-op, PvP and other multiplayer modes remain unannounced.
Exact protagonist modelDirect interviews conflict over player creation/naming versus a more predetermined character framing.
Detailed combat economyWeapons, ammo pressure and armour progression are described; inventory, crafting, rarity and exact repair rules are not.
World size & traversalOpen world is confirmed, but map size, seamless topology, vehicles and special traversal systems are not.
Price, editions & storefrontsNo price, edition lineup, preorder plan or complete storefront set has been announced.
Online & post-launch modelCrossplay, always-online requirements, DLC and broader post-launch support remain unresolved.
Why Sourceborne leaves these blank: unknown is a valid answer. A plausible mechanic from another shooter, an old StarCraft game or a job listing is not evidence that this project has it.
