Blizzard's new STARCRAFT is an open-world shooter targeting Spring 2030

Blizzard announced STARCRAFT at BlizzCon on 12 September 2026, confirming an original open-world shooter in the Koprulu Sector targeting Spring 2030. Dan Hay says the current game is third-person, focused on single-player and built around the power and vulnerability of a marine on the ground. The reveal was cinematic only. Blizzard now says the game will not be exclusive, but the complete platform list remains undisclosed; multiplayer and the exact character-creation model are still unconfirmed.

The project is early, but it is not just a concept

Blizzard has exposed enough production and design evidence to show a substantial game taking shape. The same evidence does not justify pretending the project is close to a playable public state.

What indicates real production depth

Multiple parts of the game are being worked on at once

Developers now speak concretely about camera, mission structure, open-world interaction, armour, factions and narrative direction. Project-specific recruitment also spans combat, encounters, bosses, missions, world systems, NPC gameplay, UI, cinematics, art, VFX, performance and production.

That is useful evidence of production breadth. It is not permission to turn every job requirement into a promised shipping feature.

Current design direction

The clearest picture is a personal Marine campaign inside a reactive open world

These are the strongest connected ideas in the current developer interview record. This is orientation, not a substitute for the deeper pages: Gameplay & Systems goes into mechanics; Everything We Know holds the broad dossier; Timeline explains how the evidence changed; Rumours & Unconfirmed tracks unresolved claims.

Ground-level StarCraft

Third-person is meant to make Marine scale physical

The current principal camera is third-person, in part because Blizzard wants the player to see the armour and feel its weight. Familiar StarCraft threats are being reconsidered from the ground rather than from the RTS camera; occasional perspective exceptions remain possible.

Gameplay & systems →
Explore → discover → disrupt

An open world built around interference

Developers describe exploration as more than travelling between missions: the intended loop includes discovery and disrupting hostile relationships, including using conflict between enemy groups as a player tool. Exact implementation is still undisclosed.

Open-world design →
Armour as identity

The suit is meant to become yours

Armour is one of the best-supported gameplay pillars. The player is expected to maintain it, build it up and make it their own; newer testimony also describes finding material in the world that can be repurposed to strengthen the suit. The exact upgrade economy remains unknown.

Gameplay & systems →
Combat pressure

Weapons and resources should force decisions

Recent developer testimony discusses ammunition problems, more than one weapon type and tactical decision-making. That is meaningful direction, but it still does not establish a fixed ammunition-scarcity model, final arsenal, inventory system or loot structure.

Combat evidence →
Campaign & character arc

The protagonist is meant to grow into heroism

The current design is a complete narrative with serious authored missions, side quests and freeform exploration. Hay also describes a protagonist who learns how to become a hero amid imperfect characters, resource conflict, politics, intrigue and betrayal; the exact cast and customisation model remain unresolved.

Story direction →
A changed Koprulu Sector

Seventy years creates room for new factions and relationships

The new story is described as roughly 70 years after the previous StarCraft story. Terran, Zerg and Protoss remain important, with Blizzard emphasising their asymmetry, but the jump is intended to create space for changed politics, splintered groups and new characters rather than guarantee returning legacy cast.

The public reveal is cinematic, not gameplay

The announcement establishes tone, imagery and product identity. It cannot be used to prove mission structure, camera implementation or a playable scene.

Latest material clarification

Blizzard says STARCRAFT will not be exclusive — but the platform list is still open

Direct Blizzard statement

Non-exclusivity is established; the launch-platform set is not

Xbox UK publicly associated the game with Xbox console, Blizzard later said it was not yet announcing platforms, and a follow-up Blizzard statement said STARCRAFT “won't be exclusive.” The safe current conclusion is therefore narrow: exclusivity is contradicted, while PC, PlayStation, Nintendo and exact Xbox-generation support cannot be filled in by inference.

Gameplay detail

Ammunition, weapon variety and scavenging make the open-world loop clearer

Dan Hay says the current design asks players to solve ammunition problems, contemplates more than one weapon type and lets useful finds in the world strengthen armour or improve preparation. Those comments make the preparation loop more concrete without establishing a survival-style ammo economy, final arsenal or formal crafting system.

Future · official disclosure horizon

Blizzard says more reveals will come, but there is no public roadmap

The current Intel contains future-state evidence, not a conventional release roadmap with dated milestones.

Coming over the years ahead

Gameplay reveals and world deep-dives are the next confirmed disclosure categories

Blizzard has said it will share more over the coming years, including gameplay reveals and deeper looks at the world. No year, event, quarter, demo, beta or public test has been attached to those disclosures.

Official disclosure intentNo reveal dateNo public test date

Next named lifecycle gate: Spring 2030 remains the current announced release window.

What this does not mean: Sourceborne does not turn “over the coming years” into a 2027 gameplay reveal, a BlizzCon appearance, a beta window or a staged feature roadmap.

Product direction: the team has described 2030 as a serious internal target. Confidence strengthens the target's significance; it does not make the date inevitable.

Direct answers

Five useful questions

Is the game called StarCraft: Dominion?

No. Blizzard currently calls the product STARCRAFT. Dominion is the title of the announcement cinematic and campaign language, not an established commercial subtitle.

Is STARCRAFT definitely a third-person game?

Third-person is the current developer-described principal camera, partly because the team wants the player to see and feel the weight of Marine armour. Developers have left room for occasional exceptions, and public gameplay has not yet demonstrated how that is implemented.

Is multiplayer or co-op confirmed?

No. Single-player is the current development focus. Co-op, PvP and other multiplayer features remain unknown; recruitment requirements do not establish a shipping mode.

Is it a live-service game?

Not in the seasonal sense described by the current development lead. The team is building a self-contained narrative “box product” with a complete story. That does not rule out multiplayer, patches, DLC, expansions or online/account requirements.

Which platforms will it release on?

The complete platform list has not been announced. Xbox UK publicly mentioned Xbox console, Blizzard later said it was not yet announcing platforms, and Blizzard has since clarified that the game will not be exclusive.

Reliability and review dates. Evidence cutoff: 25 September 2026. A title/subtitle change, exact release date, public gameplay reveal, public test, platform announcement, multiplayer clarification or material product-model change should trigger a fresh review. Developer-described design direction is strong current evidence but remains changeable before release.
