New StarCraft game rumours: Dominion, multiplayer, co-op and what remains unconfirmed

BlizzCon settled the biggest rumour: Blizzard really is making a new open-world StarCraft shooter. What remains open is narrower but still important—multiplayer and co-op, the full platform list, protagonist creation, playable races, the meaning of Dominion, and how much of the pre-reveal campaign survives into the finished game. This page tracks those claims one by one: where they came from, what the strongest evidence now says, and what would actually confirm or rule them out.

23 open or easy-to-misread claims tracked11 material rumours closed or resolvedModes and protagonist model still openAdjacent projects kept separate

Evidence rule: a rumour does not become stronger because more sites repeat it. Recruitment, cinematic imagery, community theories and adjacent StarCraft projects are never promoted into product facts without direct evidence.

01 / Fast answers

The short answers to the rumours people keep searching

These are intentionally direct. The deeper sections below explain where each claim came from, what supports or challenges it, and what would settle it.

Is the game called StarCraft: Dominion? No.

Dominion is the announcement cinematic/campaign label. Blizzard currently calls the product STARCRAFT; no commercial subtitle is established. See the naming evidence →

Is multiplayer confirmed?No.

The team has established a current single-player focus. Some pre-reveal reporting and recruitment create a multiplayer signal, but no shipping multiplayer mode is announced. Audit the mode claims →

Is co-op confirmed?No.

Pre-reveal source commentary described a possible co-op campaign formulation. Post-reveal developer material has not confirmed co-op. See the co-op chain →

Can you play as Zerg or Protoss? Not established.

Zerg and Protoss are part of the current project evidence, but presence or opposition is not the same as playable-faction confirmation. See the playability boundary →

Is StarCraft a live-service game? Not in the seasonal model developers currently describe.

Dan Hay describes a box/non-seasonal narrative product with an ending. Multiplayer, online requirements, DLC and post-launch support remain separate unresolved questions. See what that does—and does not—settle →

02 / Highest priority

The most important things Blizzard still has not settled

These claims are high priority because resolving them would materially change how the game is described—not because Sourceborne thinks they are likely to become true.

Conflicting sources

Is Xbox a settled launch platform?

Xbox UK said the game is coming to Xbox console. Blizzard later said it was not announcing platforms yet, then clarified only that STARCRAFT will not be exclusive.

Current answer: the Xbox communication is real, but the complete launch-platform matrix is not settled. [S038][S039][S040]
What would settle it: Blizzard/storefronts publish the final platform list.
Rumour

Will the campaign support co-op?

Pre-reveal source commentary from Jez Corden described a single-player story / co-op campaign signal, but post-reveal developers have only established a current single-player focus. Co-op remains reporting, not a confirmed feature. [S076]

Current answer: co-op remains unconfirmed. Single-player focus does not mean single-player only. [S025][S028]
What would settle it: Blizzard names campaign co-op, shows it, or explicitly rules it out.
Rumour

Will the game have any multiplayer component?

Pre-reveal commentary expected some multiplayer, while recruitment shows relevant capability. Traceable competitive-multiplayer discussion is community theory, not product evidence; Corden did not establish PvP specifically. [S077]

Current answer: multiplayer, PvP, player count, crossplay and server model are all unknown.
What would settle it: first-party mode documentation or gameplay appears.
Conflicting sources

Do players create and name the protagonist?

Inven says players create and name the protagonist. The GameSpot interview family describes a persistent predetermined/named-character model differently.

Current answer: there is a real direct-source wording discrepancy. It should not be flattened into certainty either way. [S025][S028]
What would settle it: Blizzard shows character creation/naming or explicitly defines the protagonist model.
Unconfirmed idea

Are Protoss or Zerg playable?

Both species are part of the announced game's world and developer discussion, but presence, opposition and cinematic visibility do not establish playability.

Current answer: neither Protoss nor Zerg is confirmed playable. [S029]
What would settle it: a first-party faction/playability reveal explicitly says so.
Unconfirmed idea

Will Roxara / Conflicting Records appear in the shipped game?

Developers later confirmed that the pre-reveal campaign was teasing this project. That confirms the marketing connection—not literal carryover of Roxara, Theta Squadron or Project Spellbind.

Current answer: teaser relationship confirmed; final narrative continuity unconfirmed. [S066][S025]
What would settle it: final-game material names the campaign locations, people or operations—or explicitly separates them.
03 / Gameplay & modes

What we know about multiplayer — and what we still do not

Blizzard has confirmed that the team is currently focused on a single-player campaign. Beyond that, the mode picture is still open. Some multiplayer ideas came from pre-reveal reporting or job listings, but none of them has been announced as a shipping feature.

Campaign co-op

Rumour · pre-reveal reporting

Before the official reveal, Jez Corden described the project as having a substantial single-player story and potentially co-op. Since the reveal, Blizzard has spoken clearly about a single-player focus, but has not confirmed or ruled out campaign co-op.

Why people think it could happenA named reporter discussed co-op before Blizzard announced the game.
What we know nowThe current development focus is single-player. Co-op has not been announced. [S025][S028]
What would settle itBlizzard confirms, shows or explicitly rules out campaign co-op.
Important: later articles and forum posts repeating the same pre-reveal comments do not count as separate confirmation.

PvP / competitive multiplayer

Speculation only

Players naturally ask whether a StarCraft shooter will have competitive multiplayer, but the current evidence does not point to a specific PvP mode. A general multiplayer possibility cannot be turned into evidence for deathmatch, team modes, ranked play or matchmaking.

Why people ask about itStarCraft's competitive history and normal shooter expectations make PvP an obvious question.
What we know nowBlizzard has not announced any PvP or competitive mode.
What would settle itAn official PvP, matchmaking or competitive-mode announcement.

A Helldivers-like multiplayer mode

Source speculation

Corden said before the reveal that he was “pretty sure” some kind of Helldivers-like mode might exist. He presented that as his expectation, not as something he had actually seen or that Blizzard had confirmed.

Where the idea came fromPre-reveal speculation from a named reporter.
What we know nowNo official mode or independent evidence currently supports a Helldivers-style structure.
What would settle itBlizzard announces or demonstrates a mode with that structure.

Live service / seasonal game

Current evidence points away from it

Some job listings mentioned networking, multiplayer or live-game experience, which led to speculation that StarCraft might be built as a seasonal live-service game. Dan Hay has since described the current plan as a complete narrative game with a beginning, middle and end, and specifically said it is not being built around seasons.

Why the rumour startedPeople read multiplayer and live-game experience in recruitment listings as clues about the finished product.
What we know nowThe current developer direction is a complete, non-seasonal narrative game. [S025]
What is still unknownDLC, expansions, online-account requirements, patches and other post-launch support have not been fully explained.

“Single-player only”

Overstatement

Blizzard has said that single-player and the Marine fantasy are the team's current focus. That does not mean Blizzard has announced that the finished game will contain no multiplayer at all.

Confirmed directionSingle-player is the current development focus. [S028]
Still unknownWhether co-op, PvP or another multiplayer component will also exist.
What would settle itA complete first-party breakdown of the game's modes.

UE5, classes, loot rarity and survival-style ammo systems

Easy to overread

There are real clues about the areas Blizzard is working on: weapons, ammunition problems, abilities, progression and strengthening armour. But those clues do not tell us the final engine, whether the game has formal classes, whether loot uses rarity colours, whether there is a crafting system, or whether ammunition works like a survival game.

What the evidence really supportsWeapons, ammo pressure, progression work and armour strengthening are part of the current design conversation. [S046][S072]
What we should not assumeUE5 as the final engine, fixed classes, skill trees, loot tiers, crafting, durability UI or a survival-horror ammo economy.
What would settle itPublic gameplay or a direct Blizzard explanation of those systems.
Is StarCraft multiplayer confirmed? No. Blizzard has not announced a multiplayer mode.
Is StarCraft co-op confirmed? No. Co-op appeared in pre-reveal reporting, but Blizzard's current public description only establishes a single-player focus.
Is it a live-service game? The current plan is a complete, non-seasonal narrative game. Other online or post-launch features remain open questions.
04 / Identity & story

Dominion is real. “StarCraft: Dominion” is not the announced product title.

The reveal closed several title rumours but left genuine story questions open, especially around the protagonist and how much pre-reveal campaign fiction survives into the game.

“The game is called StarCraft: Dominion”

Resolved rumours

Dominion is the official title of the announcement cinematic/campaign terminology. Blizzard currently calls the product STARCRAFT. No commercial subtitle is established. [S001][S003]

Why it looked plausibleThe official video itself uses Dominion in its title.
What resolved itFirst-party product naming remains STARCRAFT.
How Sourceborne handles itUse Dominion for the cinematic; never silently promote it to subtitle.

Player-created, player-named protagonist

Conflicting sources

Two direct interview families do not currently reconcile cleanly. Inven says players create and name the protagonist; GameSpot describes a persistent predetermined/named-character model differently. Translation, framing or evolving design could explain the discrepancy, but none of those explanations is itself established.

What is safeA persistent protagonist is central to the current design.
What is not safeFull character creator, fixed hero, player-chosen name, appearance/background system.
What would settle itCharacter-creation reveal or explicit developer clarification.

Sarah Kerrigan returns

Community theory

A community theory proposes Sarah Kerrigan as a solution to the ARG redaction S. K███████. Initial/character-pattern matching is not cast confirmation, and Blizzard has not identified the redacted person or announced Kerrigan for this game. [S079]

OriginARG redaction interpretation.
Other evidenceNone.
What would settle itExplicit first-party identity/cast reveal.

Roxara, Project Spellbind and 2575 are literal final-game story details

Unconfirmed interpretation

The marketing relationship is confirmed: developers said the Conflicting Records campaign teased the announced project. That does not prove Roxara appears as a playable location, Spellbind survives as a mission/operation, or 2575 is the exact principal year of the shipped story.

ConfirmedThe campaign teased this project. [S066][S025]
UnconfirmedLiteral story/location carryover and exact game-year mapping.
What would settle itOfficial game chronology, story synopsis or matching in-game material.
Is the new game called StarCraft Dominion? No. STARCRAFT is the announced product name; Dominion is the reveal cinematic/campaign title.
Is this StarCraft 3?Blizzard has not announced the product as StarCraft III. Search/headline wording does not create official numbering.
Is Kerrigan confirmed? No. The current Kerrigan claim is a community theory derived from incomplete promotional text.
05 / Platforms & product

The platform picture is a communication conflict, not a complete launch list

This is one of the clearest examples of why Sourceborne separates the underlying claim from confident-looking headlines.

Xbox console is a settled launch platform

Conflicting sources

Xbox UK's 12 September post said the game is coming to Xbox console. Blizzard then told Kotaku on 17 September that it was not announcing StarCraft platforms at that time, followed by a 21 September statement that the game “won't be exclusive.”

What is realThe Xbox UK statement and both Blizzard follow-ups. [S038][S039][S040]
What is not settledComplete platform list, exact Xbox hardware, Game Pass, PC/PlayStation/Nintendo support.
What would settle itProduct/store/platform announcement.

PC and PlayStation are confirmed because a StarCraft role mentions compatibility work

Not confirmed

A project UI role names platform compatibility across PC, Xbox and PlayStation. That is a meaningful production signal, but the evidence boundary prevents it from becoming a launch-platform commitment while Blizzard explicitly says the platform list is not yet announced.

What recruitment provesThe team is working with relevant compatibility concerns.
What it does not proveFinal launch support on every named platform.
What would settle itFirst-party platform/store listing.

Xbox exclusive

Contradicted

Microsoft ownership and Xbox's reveal coverage generated the inference, but Blizzard subsequently said the game will not be exclusive. That closes the exclusivity claim without telling us which additional platforms will ship.

Closed byDirect Blizzard spokesperson response. [S040]
Still unknownWhich non-Xbox platforms, when, and under what release terms.
Current stateNon-exclusive confirmed; full platform list unresolved.

Spring 2030 is guaranteed and cannot move

Overstatement

Blizzard has announced Spring 2030 and developers have publicly expressed confidence in the date. That makes it a serious current target, but it remains future delivery—not a guarantee.

EstablishedSpring 2030 target.
Not establishedExact date or immutability.
What would settle itDate narrowing, release, or official movement.

“Box product” means a physical disc edition is confirmed

Easy to misread

Dan Hay's “box product” wording describes the intended product structure: a complete narrative game rather than a seasonal model. It does not announce physical packaging, price, editions, offline capability or DLC policy.

06 / Common overreads

Plausible-sounding claims the evidence still does not support

These are not promoted as “big rumours.” They are recurring interpretation traps—places where a real fact gets stretched into a stronger game claim than the evidence supports.

Cinematic credit → game credit

Mick Gordon is composing the entire game

The reviewed source record only establishes early thematic contribution and announcement-cinematic credit context. Finishing Move scored the cinematic and Derek Duke is credited as music director.

Current answer: the finished-game composer/soundtrack team is not established. [S041]
Open world → traversal assumption

Open world means vehicles are confirmed

Blizzard has announced an open-world shooter, but the current Intel does not establish player vehicles, mounts or a vehicle-traversal system.

Current answer: traversal implementation remains undisclosed. [S001]
Open world → topology assumption

The game is one seamless or procedurally generated map

“Open world” does not tell us whether the final structure is one seamless map, several large spaces, gated regions or something else. No procedural-generation system is established either.

Current answer: world topology and generation model are unknown.
Cinematic identity → player identity

The recruit in Dominion is definitely the playable protagonist

The announcement cinematic depicts a recruit, but cinematic character identity is not evidence for the final player-character model—especially while direct interviews still conflict over creation/naming.

Current answer: do not equate cinematic viewpoint with playable-protagonist identity. [S003]
Faction imagery → allegiance

Marine focus means the protagonist is a confirmed Dominion loyalist

The project is Marine-focused and Dominion imagery is central to the campaign, but the protagonist's precise political allegiance and relationship to the Dominion are not established.

Current answer: Marine fantasy is supported; exact allegiance is not.
Recruitment → final systems

Player-systems hiring confirms classes, skill trees or a final ability system

Recruitment names movement, weapons, abilities and progression as design work. That identifies production domains, not the final shape or even survival of a specific class/skill-tree implementation.

Current answer: work area ≠ shipping feature. [S046]
Why keep these visible? Search engines, social posts and derivative articles often turn a narrow fact into a stronger shorthand. Recording the boundary here lets Sourceborne answer that shorthand directly without giving it the same weight as a sourced rumour chain.
07 / Resolved history

Rumours that BlizzCon or later evidence actually closed

Closed rumours stay visible because they show how the evidence evolved. They are not kept alive as current uncertainty.

08 / Other StarCraft rumours

Some StarCraft rumours are about something else

Sharing the StarCraft name is not enough to make a rumour relevant to this shooter. These claims stay separate unless reliable evidence explicitly connects them to this game.

Not linked to this game
Adjacent business rumour

Nexon StarCraft negotiations

Claims that Nexon is co-developing the announced shooter are contradicted at the 13 September interview cut: Blizzard CMO Monica Austin said Blizzard was the project's sole developer then. Broader partnership discussion does not establish a role on this shooter, and the statement is not a permanent no-partners promise. [S073]

What would connect it to this game: contract, credits or developer statement explicitly connects Nexon to this game.
Adjacent product rumour

External studio / new StarCraft RTS

A separate strategy project, if real, is not evidence about the shooter. Genre and franchise overlap cannot merge product identities.

What would connect it to this game: reporting explicitly identifies the announced shooter and the external studio relationship.
Search wording

“StarCraft III”

Search and headline wording may use StarCraft 3 to describe the franchise return. Blizzard's announced product name is STARCRAFT; no mainline numbering has been established.

What would connect it to this game: Blizzard formally adopts StarCraft III or establishes mainline numbering.
Legacy project

Project Ares continuity

Earlier cancelled shooter work does not establish direct continuity, reused systems, assets or code in the current project.

What would connect it to this game: credible source explicitly identifies lineage or reuse.
Legacy project

StarCraft: Ghost continuity

Genre similarity and the fact Blizzard previously attempted a StarCraft shooter are historical context—not evidence that this game continues Ghost.

What would connect it to this game: explicit developer or documentary continuity evidence.
Attempt-count shorthand

“Third shooter attempt” means reused design

Counting historical attempts says nothing about technical or design inheritance. It cannot establish shared code, assets, systems or story continuity.

What would connect it to this game: specific, attributable lineage evidence.
09 / Method

How Sourceborne decides whether a rumour deserves space

The page is designed to reduce false certainty—not to maximise the number of rumours on screen.

Unknown ≠ rumour

An undisclosed feature enters this register only if it has a traceable reporting/community origin, a testable hypothesis or a material interpretation risk.

Repetition ≠ corroboration

Ten articles rewriting one livestream or job listing remain one evidence chain.

Recruitment ≠ shipping feature

A role can prove a work area or capability requirement. It cannot confirm multiplayer, UE5, platforms, skill trees or live service.

Cinematic ≠ gameplay

A trailer can establish imagery and marketing provenance, not player character, camera, playable race or mechanics.

Similarity ≠ continuity

Ghost, Project Ares, another RTS or another StarCraft deal remain separate until identity evidence connects them.

Resolved rumours stay visible

Closure history is retained so readers can see which claims were confirmed, contradicted or simply resolved differently than expected.

Evidence strength is not probability. “Strong reporting signal” means the origin is better evidenced; it does not mean Sourceborne assigns a percentage chance that the rumour will ship.
10 / Resolution watch

The next disclosures that would materially shrink this page

These are not predicted events. They are the evidence gates that would actually resolve current claims.

Complete platform listWould resolve Xbox/PC/PlayStation launch-support claims and the remaining platform conflict.
Mode revealWould resolve campaign co-op, PvP and “some multiplayer” claims.
Public gameplayCould resolve ammo, loot, armour-repair, role/class and open-world implementation theories.
Character creation revealWould reconcile the direct-source discrepancy around creation, naming and customisation.
Playable faction revealWould settle Protoss/Zerg playability rather than presence alone.
Story chronologyCould confirm or reject Roxara, Spellbind, 2575 and ARG identity theories.
Commercial modelWould clarify DLC, expansions, services, online requirements and post-launch support.
Release-date changeWould narrow, move or confirm the current Spring 2030 target.
