Grounded 2 timeline: from announcement to Into the Abyss and Fall 2026
Grounded 2 moved from its June 2025 reveal into Game Preview and Early Access seven weeks later, then expanded through major content drops, Feature Updates and Public Tests. This timeline keeps the material development history in one place — newest first — and shows only the next confirmed gate above it.
Timeline
Significant changes in the game’s public and playable history. Routine hotfixes and test-build iterations are excluded unless they materially changed the picture.
Live build 0.5.1. Into the Abyss is the latest major content state; the complete story and intended park are not yet finished.

Live patch
0.5.1 expands progression and becomes the current live build
Obsidian releases Patch 0.5.1 on Steam, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox PC and PS5. It improves Buggy perception, adds/expands Molar upgrades, removes Infused Ooze and changes the Tier 4 Omni-Axe recipe, alongside progression, multiplayer, Abyss, MIX.R, UI and stability fixes.
Obsidian reduces mosquito pressure and the O.G.R.R. Toe Biter Leviathan encounter while fixing crashes and progression defects. It becomes an important post-Abyss balance/fix build and is later superseded by Patch 0.5.1 on 11 September.
Obsidian opens a community vote to name the Fall update
The vote confirms that the next major content gate after Into the Abyss is a Fall update. It does not establish the final title, version number or exact release date.
Confirmed first-party; future details still bounded
The Year Two roadmap becomes the current planning state
After Into the Abyss, the roadmap reorganises the forward plan around Fall, Winter and longer-term Future Plans. Items absent from this revision are not treated as cancelled without evidence.

Into the Abyss opens the Pond as PS5 Early Access begins
Grounded 2 receives its largest world expansion to that point, adding the Pond, deep-water progression and the Toe-biter Buggy. PlayStation 5 joins the active Early Access platform set on the same day.

1.0 direction
Chris Parker defines what still has to be completed before 1.0
Parker declines to give a release date and instead ties 1.0 readiness to filling the intended park scale and story pieces. It is the clearest known boundary on full-release readiness without inventing a window.
Into the Abyss and PS5 Early Access are set for 11 August
Obsidian names the Summer update, confirms the Pond expansion and announces that PS5 will enter Early Access alongside it. The August milestone becomes both a content release and a platform expansion.
Buggy Racing expands Playgrounds and Steam Deck support arrives
The 0.4.1 feature release adds race-building tools and a Lakeside Loop starting map while extending the platform/network work around Steam Deck and Microsoft-account crossplay.
Beat the Heat turns Buggies into a progression layer
The Spring update adds persistent Buggy progression, mutations, the Black Soldier Ant Buggy, King Dozer and the Sinkhole Anthill. Buggies move from individual mounts toward a broader progression system.

Feature release
Playgrounds Mode goes live as its own release
The creator mode launches with logic-driven tools for custom encounters, arenas and puzzles. A roadmap item originally grouped under Winter has become a standalone delivery track.
The Toxic Tangle expands the park and reshapes progression
The Garden biome, Ladybug Buggy, Snake Colossus, mutation restructuring and further building systems materially expand the live game. Obsidian also points players to an updated roadmap.

Roadmap revision
Roadmap R2 redraws the 2026 delivery plan
The revised planning state separates Playgrounds into its own track and introduces a clearer Spring milestone before the larger Summer update. It establishes that the roadmap is a versioned planning instrument, not a timeless promise.
Player feedback changes Grounded 2’s 2026 priorities
The team says strong Buggy reception is pulling more Buggy work forward, while weaker builder satisfaction has accelerated building content. Community response is explicitly changing the schedule.
Feature Updates become a live part of the development cadence
After introducing a smaller Feature Update category, Obsidian ships the December 0.2.2 release with Coziness, PEEP.R 2K, engine and performance work. Grounded 2 now has an intermediate update type between major content drops and routine fixes.
Hairy and Scary delivers the first roadmap-scale content milestone
Update 0.2 adds AXL, BUILD.M, Buggy Hot Pouch functionality, equipment and localisation work. It completes the first Public Test → live major-update cycle after launch.

Public testing
Grounded 2 opens its first Public Test Build
The 0.2 Public Test establishes a repeatable pre-release testing route for major updates. Later content and feature releases continue to use PTBs where first-party records establish them.
The game launches through Xbox Game Preview and Steam Early Access with an incomplete story and a commitment to ongoing community-led development. Obsidian also publishes the original Early Access roadmap.

Reliability and review dates
Evidence cutoff: 25 September 2026.
The chronology is generated from the governed Grounded 2 history/current-state records. Exact dates, ranges and month-only entries are preserved rather than normalised into false precision. Historical roadmap states remain distinct from the mutable current roadmap.
Current watch: the next confirmed major gate is the Fall 2026 update. Patch 0.5.1 has shipped; whether another maintenance build arrives before Fall is unknown and is not rendered as a future lifecycle gate.
